Hunting in Croatia

About Croatian Hunting Grounds

Modern hunting in Croatia started in 1881, which until then had been twofold:

for the poor part of the population it was a resource for survival, while for the smaller aristocratic part of the population served as a source of fun and pleasure.
The Republic of Croatia is a land of rich hunting tradition, attractive hunting areas and diverse wildlife.

The oldest hunting ground of Podunavlje-Podravlje was founded in 1697 when Prince Eugen Savojski got possession of the land from Emperor Leopold I.

The hunting grounds are located in a unique natural environment with huge diversity in the marvellous area where the Mediterranean, the Alps and Pannonia meet.

In the eastern, lowlands of Croatia – Slavonia and Baranja, hunting of deer, roe deer, wild boar, small game, hairy and feathered game is possible.

In the area of Lika and Gorski Kotar there is hunting for bears and grouse.

In the littoral mountain regions of Croatia, Dalmatia and the islands, a special attraction is the hunting of the chamois (mountain goat) and mouflon (subspecies of wild sheep), also hunting of special small feathered game that lives at higher altitudes – the rock partridge and the ruffed grouse.

For each of these areas, besides diverse wildlife, there are specific customs and hunting methods.
